Travel Report: Lake Ohrid, Macedonia (FYROM)

One of the countries I had on my bucket list, while living in Bulgaria, was Macedonia. Before the weather was getting cold we decided that early October was the perfect time for a weekend getaway to the famous Lake Ohrid in south-western Macedonia.

Here is a little summary of the costs I had during the weekend

Total days: 3

Total/day: 28,52 Euro

Accommodation

We stayed at the beautiful Villa Ohrid. The Villa has 4 rooms and the owner of the place is very friendly. We arrived on Friday very late in Ohrid and she stayed up and waited for us! After a small chitchat she told us how everything works and that we would do the registration the next morning! The price for the two rooms was good (78 € for 5 people).  From the balconies of the rooms you have a great view over the city and the lake! Villa Ohrid is about 10 minutes away from the city centre.

Transport

We rented a car in Bulgaria and drove down to Macedonia. The price included the car (70 € for 3 days) and Gas (70 €). Pretty good deal if you share it with 5 people!

Food

We left late on the first day, therefore we had no breakfast and lunch. We had both dinners at a restaurant about 100 meters away from Villa Ohrid where we got 15 % discount on the bill. The personnel are very friendly and the food was delicious. They are open until late!

We had lunch at two restaurants in the city center. The food in Macedonia is very good!

Activities

We each paid 100 denars to enter the Cathedral of Santa Sofia. It’s definitely worth it! Most of the churches have no entrance fee!

Miscellaneous

Some snacks and drinks and as a smoker of course cigarettes.

Summary

Macedonia is perfect for a cheap weekend getaway. Ohrid was a perfect place to stay at and we really enjoyed our time there. I guess that if we would have visited other less known places, the weekend would have been even cheaper! And of course, if you would cut on the cigarettes and all the other unnecessary stuff I guess you could have a great weekend for less than 70 €.

Have you visited Macedonia already? What was your impression of the price-performance ratio?

I am SO bad at keeping detailed lists like this!! I’ve heard Macedonia is really inexpensive … looks like that’s right! What a deal to rent your car!

Yes it is very cheap and if we would have gone to a less known place and would have used a bus instead of a car, I guess we would have spent even less than this!!

I’m starting my first budget for my next trip and I feel as if it’s going to be VERY hard for me to be this detailed, holy crap man!

I stayed with my friend in Macedonia so it was even cheaper! Beer for €0.50 and cheap and tasty pastries everywhere. Stunning scenery. Who can argue with that?

I didn’t manage to visit Lake Ohrid – its not the same in winter when it’s snowing. I hope to go there in the summer sometime though. Looks gorgeous.
