Staying in Hotels or even in Hostels all the time can be expensive and tiring after a while. Therefore I decided to live a little like a local while traveling. During my last trip to Sri Lanka, I stayed in a nice house in the capital.
I have rented some holiday houses previously with my family when we were a big group traveling but I always thought that the process would be too complicated including many phone calls and emails and only affordable if you would travel with a big group.
I heard that Roomorama offered a service to live like a local. No more hotels or hostels, no more eating out, you can cook for yourself in your own kitchen and not share it with many other travelers. It sounded too good. I rented a house in a suburb of Colombo and stayed there for the last day of my trip in Sri Lanka. It was good to be back in a nice house after spending days in the jungle looking for leopards and other animals.
Finally I had my own little fully equipped kitchen, my own big living room and big comfortable bed. The house was perfect and big enough for a whole family. I had a big pool and a big terrace connected to my bedroom. The shower was half outside and while showering it started to rain a little, which was awesome!!
I was living like a Sri Lankan
Surely not all Sri Lankan are living like this but I was living like a local in this neighborhood of Colombo. The owner of the house, a sri lankan, told me where the most important things are and I was ready to discover the area. I never made it to the actual center of the city but the neighborhood was busy enough.
There were many more apartments in Colombo on Roomoarama. This time it wasn’t much about the location, it was important after days in the bush that I had a comfortable place where I could feel at home for a short time.
I booked the house online via the website of Roomorama. It’s easy to navigate and you can do an advanced search and look for a specific price range, space or location. They offer houses, apartments and also single rooms in apartments, hotels or houses.
The booking itself was done quickly. I contacted the host via the website and he confirmed the availability of the house. Then we quickly exchanged contact details and once I was in the area I called him and told him the time I would arrive.
Roomorama provides you a payment code which you have to give to your host. Once the host has this code your payment will be transferred to the hosts account.
I had no phone signal in Sri Lanka for 5 days so the host let me use his phone to arrange a pick up to the airport for the next day and to order a pizza.
Have you ever used this service or would you try it on your next trip? Looking forward to your great response in a comment below!
