Since I’ve lived in Bangkok for a year in 2012, Thailand is one of my favourite destinations and one I’ve come back to every year since then. Even if it’s just for a few days a year I always try to make it down south to the Krabi region!
Flight to Krabi
From Bangkok Thai Airways and other airlines have many flights to the south!
It is also possible to take the night train and bus to Krabi. The train goes to Surat Thani, and from there you have to catch a bus to Krabi. You can book the whole trip (train and bus) at the ticket counter at the Bangkok Hualamphong station. A combined ticket in the first class costs THB 1,589 (38 euros) and in the second class THB 1018 (24 Euro). Who’s not in a hurry and do not want to spend much money should go for the train in the second class.
Transport from the airport
After arriving at the airport, it is possible to take a taxi or the shuttle bus to the hotel or hostel. Transfer by shuttle bus costs THB 150 (3.60 euros) to Ao Nang and THB 90 (2.15 euros) to Krabi Town.
From Krabi Town you can take the ferry then to go to Phi Phi Island. And from Ao Nang you can take a Longboat to Railay Beach and Tonsai Beach.
Accommodation in Krabi
I stayed in Ao Nang, since it is the largest town in the region and it’s easy to get from there to all beautiful bays and nearby islands.
I have already stayed at many places in Krabi and Ao Nang. If you want a hotel, you can stay at the Haleeva Resort, which was cheap, clean and good located or at the Alisea Boutique Hotel, which at Agoda has amazing rates!
If you are looking for an affordable hostel, try the Slumber Party Hostel. If you are looking for a place with good atmosphere and great people from all over the world, then this is the right place for you! Eve, planned to stay there once for two nights but at the end left after two weeks.
Food in Krabi
The food in Krabi is slightly more expensive than in Bangkok or some other regions in Thailand, as the region is mostly designed for tourists.
At the beach promenade and on the main road there are dozens of different restaurants that offer something for every taste. If you want cheap and very tasty Thai Food, you should try the “Jamai restaurant”. The restaurant is located relatively far down on the main street, only a minute’s walk from the beach.
Who’s traveling on a low budget, should run up the main road and eat at one of the street stalls. The food tastes just as good as in Restaurants, but it only it costs the half the price.
A larger variety of different places and food stalls can you find at the beach promenade just next to the “Holiday Inn Resort”.
Attractions in Krabi
Krabi has a stunning backdrop and cool activities to offer!
With a longboat from Ao Nang you can go for just THB 100 (2.40 euros) to Tonsai Beach, Railay Beach and Phra Nang. All of these beaches are almost unrealistically perfect!
Who wants to relax at one of the stunningly beautiful beaches, snorkeling, kayaking, climbing or want to search for the hidden lagoon in Railay Beach, can quite short book in hotels, hostels or in one of the many travel agencies on the road.
You can also book one of many day trips, which are offered on every street corner. With the speedboat you can reach Phi Phi Island within an hour. There you can visit Maya Bay, where most of the movie “The Beach” was filmed.
Also you can go on an Island-hopping Tour, where you can explore on the full-day tour the islands Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island and the Phranang Cave beach.
Even water rafting, stroking elephants and feeding monkeys, visiting waterfalls, quad biking and much more. You can book all those activities in a complete package.
If you want to explore the area on your own, you can rent a scooter for THB200 (4.80 euros) per day.
Best Travel Season for Krabi
I have visited Krabi in the off season and it has rained once a day. And the rain in Thailand is not comparable with the rain in Europe. So who is planning his annual leave, should better not go there during the low season (June-November).
Shops, restaurants, attractions and travel agencies are also open during the low season.
