Reviewing 2011 – What a year!
2011 has been a crazy year. Looking back it felt like an unpredictable roller coaster ride with a lot of traveling and personal knockdowns. Nevertheless, overall it has been a good year with many new miles on my different frequent flyer accounts.
I travelled about 122.089 miles (196.484 km) around the world in 2011, this is nearly 5 times around the world! Most of my flights were within Europe. It has been an incredible travel intensive year.
January – I celebrated into the new year with me ex-girlfriend in Paris. My plan was to stay in Australia until the 16th of January but because of the floods in Oz I spontaneously decided to return to Europe and surprise her. While she though I was camping in the bush I flew all the way back and waited for he and her best friend in Paris. We were joking all the time that it would be great to kiss each other beneath the Eiffel Tower. And we did! Great way of starting a year!

February - As a Christmas and Birthday present I got a 7 days holiday from my ex-girlfriend to Spain. We flew to the place I was born, Mallorca, and spent a great week with her parents in a house at the harbor of Soller. Mallorca is a great getaway for Europeans who want to escape the cold winter.

March – Since 2009 I visit the World Business Dialogue in Cologne, Germany. It’s a congress of one week where 300 leaders of today meet 300 leaders of tomorrow. A great way to get up to date on current affairs and network. In 2011 I met many people from the previous years and we had a wicked time in Cologne.

April & May – Düsseldorf – Madrid – Panama – Managua, after a hell of a flight with my favorite Airline Iberia I finally landed in Nicaragua but without luggage. I visited my ex-girlfriend in Redonda Bay. A little bay close to Playa El Gigante and cut from the next big city by a 20 kms dirt road. A great place to relax and enjoy life. Personal circumstances didn’t allow me to fully enjoy my stay but I would like to return to Nicaragua to fully experience the country.June – In June I wrote many exams at uni and time for traveling was limited. Except for some visits in Germany and in the Netherlands there was no more time for any other travelling.
July - A friend and I wanted to go on holidays after all the exams and as we didn’t book anything and we couldn’t come up with good last minute offers we spontaneously decided to grab our bikes and bike around the Netherlands. In six days we covered about 400 km’s.

August – With two friends I traveled to Norway on a road trip filled with adventure. We went canyoning, downhill biking, fishing, hiking, hiked up a glacier etc… We had an amazing time in this beautiful country. I hope I can go back one day!

September – Part of my studies is one semester abroad. I’ve spent four and a half months in Bulgaria at the American University of Bulgaria as part of my Erasmus Semester. In September my cousin visited me and we drove with 3 other friends down to Greece to the beaches of Sithonia. We were really lucky with the weather and fully enjoyed our stay with lots of delicious food!

October - In October I flew back to Germany for 4 days for a wedding and visited Lake Ohrid in Macedonia for a weekend. Macedonia is a very special and still unknown place which will get more and more attention in the future. Go there before it get’s really crowded. We’ve spent a weekend there for less than 100 €!

November – During Fall Break together with two friends we traveled around Eastern Europe. We stopped in Sofia, Budapest, Brasov, Bucharest and Istanbul. We had an amazing time with lots of great stories to share. Especially Istanbul fascinated me!
December – The last month of the year was very intense. I had to wrap up everything in Bulgaria, write final exams and say good bye to friends I made throughout the last months. Th last days we partied a lot and once I got back to Germany I was already on the move again. A short visit in Salzburg (Austria) ended up in a lot of work. New Years Eve I celebrated with family in Hanover where I will stay the first month of 2012 before moving to Bangkok in February.
Overall a very hectic and intense year and I’m glad it’s over. 2012 will be great! F**k the Mayas, Life isn’t going to end!!!

We still have 364 days to meet
Would be nice if it works out. Are you heading to South East Asia this year?
I really haven’t thought of where I’ll go but it’s a definite possibility.

I just booked my flight to Bangkok… I think I will have some great stories to report this year
Great photos and an exciting year! And I guess that there are still lots of stories to tell from your 2011. that’s the thing about these end of the year round ups – they make me want to know more! ( Those Mayans didn’t mean to imply the world was going to end… it’s nothing more than the same kind of fear we had w/ Y2K – blame Hollywood)

Awww why is she your ex?! You’ve covered a lot — love the photo of you in your suit! Also, this whole time I didn’t realize you were in Erasmus. That’s a great program.
