2013 has been by far my best year I think and I’ve been busy, incredibly busy!
My new years resolution last year was to speak more in 2013. Speak up, speak to others and to present. I wanted to say my opinion when I thought that somebody was wrong, I wanted to be less connected online and talk to more people face to face and I wanted to present and do more public speaking.
I prefer to rather have one big resolution, then many small ones. I was able to focus more on this one thing and I think I have achieved it.
But there was so much more than speaking in 2013. I traveled a lot, I’ve met many new and old people and I fell in love with the love of my life. It’s been an incredible adventure and I would do it all over again.
10 THINGS I LOVED ABOUT 2013
1. I REACHED MY GOALS
For the first time I’ve set myself goals for the year and managed to actually achieve them within the first 10 days of the year, which was a huge surprise and there was a lot of luck involved in that.
2. I HAD THE HONOR OF DOING A TEDx TALK
Have you seen my TEDx Talk already? On the 7th of January I received an invitation to do a TEDx Talk later in the year. That was a huge surprise and was very honored. I was so nervous when I stood on that stage that I had a total black out. I had to wait over a month to see what I talked about. I’ve never been so nervous before a public speaking gig.
3. MY FIRST YEAR OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT
Last year I left my job as a marketing consultant in Bangkok and became a full time blogger. It was a huge risk but I survived the first year of self-employment and I look forward what the future has to offer.
4. THE YEAR OF CHANGE
Not only I passed the first year of self-employment, I also started two other businesses with my business partner Conni from Planet Backpack. We started the Blog Camps in Germany, where we regularly teach small groups limited to 10 people how to become professional bloggers. We also founded Transit Media, a media agency for blogger relations in Germany. We created a big network of successful and professional travel bloggers and create campaigns that matter. I simply love it!
5. SO MANY TRAVEL ADVENTURES
I’ve seen the world this year. Been to Asia, Europe and the Caribbean and was supposed to travel to Africa (maybe in 2014 then). I’ve seen incredible beaches in Curaçao, relaxed in the best corners of Thailand and jumped off bridges in Europe. It’s been an incredible travel year!
6. MY YEAR OF PUBLICATIONS AND PUBLISHING
This year I’ve been published in many magazines, websites, news sites, radio and TV. I’ve given many interviews and also written many articles and guides for other publications and websites. I’m happy that other websites like the things I write about here on Off The Path and asked me to write for them like at Chapflights.ca where I wrote a guide to Berlin or Club Carlson that asked me to contribute a blog post about five countries I think you should visit in 2014!
7. THE SUPPORT OF MY READERS
I simply love to receive so many emails from you. Sometimes I answer immediately, sometimes it takes a while, at the end though I answer them ALL. I love it that you are part of my life. It wouldn’t be the same without you. Send me an email now! ;)
8. THE YEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
Not only I’ve had the honor of doing a TEDx Talk I also was invited by several companies, travel fairs and universities to give presentations and guest lectures about blogging and lifestyle design. I’ve spoken twice at the biggest travel fair in the world ITB, I’ve given several guest lectures at universities including University of Salzburg and gave workshops to big Destination Management Organisations.
9. BEING PART OF AWESOME CAMPAIGNS
I’ve been part of some awesome campaigns this year like the #FrenchWineTrip where I traveled through France with fellow bloggers and tasted hundreds of French Wines. It was a crazy adventure and I learned so much about the country and the wines. I loved it, check out the video, isn’t it cool?
10. I FOUND THE LOVE OF MY LIFE
Besides all the travel adventures and things I manage to do this year, this is by far my biggest achievement. I met a girl at a travel fair and fell in love. Even tough I once said that this won’t change anything, there are a few things that will change at Off The Path. The time of solo traveling is over. Once you’ve found your soul mate it’s kind of boring to travel alone. I want to share everything with her as I share everything with you. But there is a difference between real and virtual world. The stories will be the same, it’s still all about information, inspiration and adventure but it might happen that I start to write more “we” instead of “I”. This should be the only noticeable difference to you!
